While ARM based system-on-a-chip (SoC) have recently been making waves in the datacenter space with product introductions from many vendors including Calxeda, HP, and Dell, all of the products released so far share one common limitation. Despite the significant improvement in energy efficiency and server density introduced with these various vendors’ products, the entire current crop of massively dense ARM-based datacenter servers is using 32-bit CPUs, with the associated memory limitations of the 32-bit address space.
Last week, Microsoft announced the completion of its development phase for the Windows 8 platform, along with the release to manufacturing of the platform’s code. Shortly after that, info on a leaked Windows 8 build made it to the web, referring to an N version of the OS, one that does not include the Windows Media Player inside.
As one of my image processing software (mainly based on NumPy, SciPy, guidata and guiqwt) is being limited by the "2GB per application" memory limit due to the fact that I'm using a 32bit build of Python on Windows, I'm currently thinking of switching to Python 64bit. That's why I've been recently investigating the 64bit/Windows/Python ecosystem.
There has been a love affair with the word “extreme” over the last few years. I really noticed the increase when “extreme” sports became popular, though it may well have happened prior without my noticing. Of course, using “sport” as a description of some of the activities is stretching it, also. Personally, I don’t consider tumbling down a hill and breaking limbs a “sport” so much as a moment of terribly unfortunate judgment.

(San Jose, Calif.) has announced that it is planning to deliver a family of multicore system-chips based on full custom cores designed to implement the 64-bit ARMv8 instruction set architecture from ARM Holdings plc (Cambridge, England), The chips will be aimed at "cloud" and data center opportunities, the company said.
