Early prototype 64-bit ARM servers could be available for testing purposes by the end of this year or possibly at the latest by the middle of next year, ARM said on Monday. ARM will try to make inexpensive 64-bit server hardware available by working with partner Applied Micro Circuits, which has licensed the chip designer's 64-bit ARMv8 architecture, said Ian Ferguson, director of server systems and ecosystem at ARM.
New version! - Emerge Desktop is a replacement windows "shell" (the desktop environment normally provided by Windows Explorer) for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, and 7 (both x86 and x64 builds, since XP). In order to replace Windows Explorer as a shell, it provides a system tray (the area that collects the icons collected at the lower right corner in Explorer), called emergeTray. It will also provide access to the users programs (normally accessed with the windows "Start" button) via a right-click on the desktop, via emergeCore.

As mentioned last week when publishing the OS X 10.8 vs. Ubuntu Linux benchmarks, a large Intel OpenGL driver performance comparison was being carried out at Phoronix. The comparison is now compete and here are the results when comparing the Intel HD OpenGL graphics performance under Apple OS X 10.8, Microsoft Windows 7 Pro, and Ubuntu Linux 12.04/12.10. The results of this Intel OpenGL gaming performance comparison are quite interesting, but reveal some troubling Linux facts.
Applied Micro lifted the curtain on its 64-bit ARM-based server platform at the Hot Chips conference this week and ignited a debate about whether ARM is the right architecture for the data center. Pat Gelsinger, a former Intel CTO who is now president and COO of EMC, said he doesn't think ARM chips are right for servers. "I don't think the math makes sense," he said.
Alex Smith, a student developer involved with Google's Summer of Code, took up the challenge of porting the 32-bit Haiku to 64-bit. He was successful and got kernel and user-space components working in the x86_64 mode.
Slipstream .Net Framework Redistributable Package 1.1 with .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 on a system running Vista or Windows 7 64-bit. This is for older software that won't run without it. This helps resolve any issues encountered when installing .NET Framework 1.1 on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.
