Start64!Last week, Microsoft announced the completion of its development phase for the Windows 8 platform, along with the release to manufacturing of the platform’s code.  Shortly after that, info on a leaked Windows 8 build made it to the web, referring to an N version of the OS, one that does not include the Windows Media Player inside.

Start64!The ActiveWin Team continues its journey evaluating the next release of Windows, officially Windows 8. For the past couple months we have spent some quality time with this new update to the next version of Windows currently under development. With the release of the Windows 8 Release Preview, Microsoft is in the home stretch and is expected to have a final release ready by the end of July with general availability this holiday 2012.

Start64!Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64-bit (x64) English, Chinese, German, French and Japanese

Start64!As far as servers go, you don't think much of them. They generally just sit in the background and do what they are supposed to. One usually doesn't think of flashy GUI interfaces when it comes to servers either. They generally are fairly straight forward and basic and in the case of Windows, haven't change a whole lot in the past several years, until now with Windows Server 8 and its Metro interface, which most likely will be largely ignored however, at least initially.

Start64!We have been tinkering around with Windows 8 for a couple of weeks now and while we are still not found of the Metro UI (especially on the desktop) there are things that do make it an appealing operating system. Still there are some things (as there always are) that will cause issues. Back when Microsoft made the move from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 many games did not like the transition to needing a Hardware abstraction layer.

Start64!This package includes the NVIDIA Display Driver version 296.17 for Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64. The drivers were spotted on the Windows Updates server. In the Device Manager, after the installation, the version will be updated to 9.18.12.9617. A list with the supported cards can be found within the .CAB file. The drivers are WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) version 1.2.

Start64!This slipped in under my radar last week – the Microsoft Touch Mouse will be updated for Windows 8. More updates to come on that so stay tuned to the  Microsoft Hardware blog for more.

Start64!It’s been a fun day running the Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64bit version in VMware Workstation 8. I’m finding Windows 8 very exciting as I consider the possibilities and it definitely changes they way you think about using Windows.
