Next year is expected to bring to the market a flurry of smartphones powered by 64-bit processors, the latest reports on the matter suggest. Apparently, chip makers such as Qualcomm, Nvidia and Broadcom will all have 64-bit mobile CPUs available in the first half of the next year, a recent article on DigiTimes reads.

Since the launch of Windows 8 over a year ago, any tablet devices that have used Microsoft's operating system have been restricted to the 32-bit version. That has stayed the same for the release of the new Windows 8.1 tablets such as the Dell Venue 8. Now Intel says that Windows 8.1 tablets will the 64-bit SKU will begin to go on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2014 using the company's latest Atom processor.

Not wanting to be left behind and forgotten in the “who’s first to 64-bit” battle, Intel has announced that new devices coming out with Bay Trail (Intel’s tablet chip platform) sometime in 2014 will have 64-bit support enabled. Unlike ARM, Intel doesn’t need a new ISA, because they were already using the same x86-x64 ISA of theirs, it’s just that the 64-bit parts in the new Atom chips have been disabled, to lower costs.
