Cydia gatekeeper Jay Freeman (Saurik) has announced on Twitter that a new version of his custom-theme jailbreak tweak is available, with support for iOS 6 and 64-bit processors. Saurik’s Tweet reads, “WinterBoard 0.9.3912 (just released) runs on iOS 7 and seems compatible with ARM64; theme artists are encouraged to report any crashes/bugs.”

After telling developers to code iOS 7-compatible apps by February “or else,” Apple is now insisting that application sellers code binaries that support both 64-bit and 32-bit titles, for compatibility reasons. It’s no mystery that there are countless 32-bit devices out there still using iOS 6, as well as the new iOS 7, making it imperative that developers sell compatible apps to sustain the App Store’s longevity, preventing Google Play from taking the crown.

Although the previous Intel Atom architecture was only 32-bit and had some hard limitations baked in it, the new one supports both 32-bit and the 64-bit extensions, just like Intel’s other chips, although for the very first versions of this architecture, the 64-bit extension seems to have been disabled (probably to save cost, and because the OS wouldn’t need it at the time anyway).

I have compiled a very useful (as I think) 64 bit kernel for Slackware 12.0 – 14.1 and/or all Slackware derivatives. For example Slax, Zenwalk, SlackEX and Exton|Defender. The kernel is compiled exactly the same way as Slackware’s latest kernel huge. “My” kernel 3.12.6-exton has even more support for new hardware, etc. Kernel 3.12.6 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org.
