The aim of our present article is to share our experience relating to the installation of the 64-bit version of Windows Vista RC1 as well as the creation of a secure testing environment.
In our previous articles we went into the details of the advantages offered by 64-bit computers, the present state of the 64-bit architecture, as well as the prerequisites for creating a suitable environment for testing 64-bit operating systems. This latter required existing hardware 64-bit capabilities. In this article we would like to help those who wish to upgrade their existing 32-bit computers into 64-bit ones.
There are people who can hardly wait to upgrade to it, while others already fear its novelty. There are people who expect an improvement in quality, while others do not make full use even of the existing capacities. There are people who use technical aspects as arguments, while others think that those mean-spirited marketing people have cooked up something again to get the money out of their pockets. Who is right? Who will benefit from the 64-bit technology, and who will not? After all, what is 64-bit?
Considering the present status of informatics, it is not worth using a computer without running some basic security programs. The issue of security even more pronounced in the case of complex systems. The main point is that even the smallest IT system component is practically useless if you do not use some security solution. In other words: in practice, IT systems and workstations will prove equally useless without anti-virus protection. In this article we will review the current status of 64-bit anti-virus protection.
Windows x64 offers 32-bit compatibility on user software level. It does not support 16-bit software any more. In terms of changeover, this is a similar situation as it was in case of the 32-bit changeover. This situation is, however, better by one aspect: now, compatibility of a new operating system is highly extendable by means of virtualisation. Although the original purpose of virtualisation, of course, was not the extension of compatibility, it is still a very good, often the only possibility to do it.
Last time we tested security software providing any kind of a solution on the x64 platform. The test left some uncertainty regarding the extent of compatibility. In this additional test we make sure about compatibility.

Recently, I have read several articles analysing the current penetration of 64-bit systems and considering what can be expected in the future. There are many contrasting viewpoints here, and the conclusions reached also differ greatly. I see the place and opportunities of 64 bits from a somewhat different perspective; I think 64-bit computing today is in the position of gradual transition before a comprehensive break-through that is going to be inevitable as a result of technical progress.
Windows Vista Beta2 Build 5308 32 and 64-bit operating systems have recently been released. Now we extend the previously created 64-bit test environment with options of switching to the new systems.
A new operating system has a lot of attractive features, and many would probably switch over to it at once if it offered that quantity of software from the time of its introduction that users have grown accustomed to. In the case of the 64-bit Windows, Microsoft promises full compatibility on the level of user programs.

An article with the above title has been published, which, for the first sight, seemed pretty trivial to me. Everybody knows exactly if he/she has a 64-bit CPU, so there’s no point in wasting time on it, this must be another needless article – I thought. Yet, I could not get it out of my head and started to study the problem from several aspects. This issue may be very important since when you buy or build a new computer nowadays, you pay virtually the same amount for both a 32-bit and a 64-bit rig.
