While nearly all modern Intel/AMD x86 hardware is 64-bit capable, among novice Linux users the question commonly is whether to install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of a given distribution. We have previously delivered benchmarks showing Ubuntu 32-bit vs. 64-bit performance while in this article is an updated look in seeing how the 32-bit versus 64-bit binary performance compares when running Ubuntu 13.04 with the Linux 3.8 kernel.

Where is the 64-bit version of the Firefox web browser for the Windows operating system? That’s a question that I have been asking myself for the past couple of years, probably ever since I updated to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional. Mozilla is offering 64-bit versions of the browser for Mac and Linux, but Windows, the operating system that is used by the majority of Internet users? There have been nightly and custom builds of 64-bit versions of Firefox, but that is about it.

Mozilla Engineering Manager Benjamin Smedberg last Friday quietly posted a thread over on the Google Groups mozilla.dev.planning discussion board titled “Turning off win64 builds.” By Wednesday, Smedberg had declared that the 64-bit version of Firefox for Windows would never see the light of day.

Okay so when it comes to calculation and that too at 64bit datatype calculation, we should always generate x64 architecture binary if your system supports. But before going to the exact experiment, I would  like to introduce to the terms x86 and x64.

Developments in central processing unit architecture have enabled CPU manufacturers to integrate multiple processors, called cores, into a single unit. Computers have been using 32-bit registers for over a decade, but modern CPU cores utilize 64-bit architecture in order to make use of higher RAM capacities.
