Workarounds for Flash Player Plug-ins in Firefox in 64-Bit

Start64!

To speed browsing on computers with 64-bit processors and operating systems, Mozilla released the first 64-bit version of Firefox, Firefox 4.0, in 2010. Unfortunately, Adobe Flash Player was not immediately available in a final 64-bit version, and when the 32-bit version is installed, browsing to a page containing Flash content can result in an error message in Firefox. However, there are workarounds that can help you to use Firefox and Flash together.

In a Flash, Adobe's 64-Bit Flash for Linux Is Back

Start64!

It was only a month ago that Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) cut off Linux's AIR, so bloggers may be excused if they were a bit surprised by last week's news. Namely? In yet another twist in the company's on-again/off-again relationship with our favorite open source operating system -- a roller-coaster ride that involved taking away 64-bit Flash for Linux last year -- Adobe has now apparently seen fit to bring it back again.

Flash Support Gadget for Developers

Start64!

About some months ago I released a flash support gadget. This is a gadget that allowed it users to run gadgets with flash content on 64bit computers. Before, that was not possible with ease because the sidebar on 64bit systems also used the 64bit Internet Explorer. For users without computer experience it was not possible to execute gadgets with flash content, so I programmed a tool that does the work for these users: the flash support gadget (Download).

Adobe: 64-bit Flash Player Later This Year

Start64!I received a response from Stefan Offerman of Adobe to my article published Tuesday titled One Year Later: Adobe Abandons 64-bit Linux Again. I'm pleased to report that the lack of a native 64-bit Flash Player does appear to be temporary. The note from Mr. Offerman reads, in part:

One Year Later: Adobe Abandons 64-bit Linux Again

Start64!Just under a year ago I wrote about how Adobe had abandoned 64-bit Linux, at least temporarily. Linux users who chose to run a 64-bit OS were left with a range of unsatisfactory choices: use an outdated beta with known security vulnerabilities; run an FOSS alternative, most likely gnash, despite limits in functionality and compatibility; or run a 32-bit browser in a 64-bit operating system. At the time the move was surprising since reviews of the 64-bit beta, like this one by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of Computer World, were quite favorable.
