Pale Moon 64bit version

Thursday, 23 May 2013 18:01

Start64!New version! - Why settle for a basic build of your Firefox browser on Windows Operating Systems when you can have one that is specifically made for getting the most out of your system? Mozilla does not provide optimized browser packages for Windows, meaning you may be losing speed and efficiency when you use your browser; and truth be told, most people use their browsers all the time!

That needs to change, so, here is the Pale Moon project: Custom-built and optimized Firefox browsers for Windows Operating Systems. Make sure to get the most speed and efficiency out of your browser!

If you run a 64-bit operating system, you can choose to download and install a native 64-bit version of Pale Moon, a so-called "x64 build". Without having to use the 32-bit compatibility layer in 64-bit Windows, native 64-bit browsers have the potential of running faster and more efficient than their 32-bit counterparts.

Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks, mainly in the areas of compatibility with 32-bit extensions to the browser. Most media-plugins are also not available in an x64 version.

Therefore, there are some very important things to note before you decide if you want to use an x64 build:

  1. You will need an x64 Windows Operating System! Just having a 64-bit processor is not enough, you will also have to have a 64-bit version of Windows (i.e. Windows XP Pro x64, Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit).
  2. Many plugins are either not available or not officially released yet for 64-bit browsers. Most notably, if you want Flash, you will need to get the beta/development version of Flash for 64-bit from Adobe Labs.
  3. Firefox/x64 (and therefore Pale Moon/x64) is still under development. Support for these browsers in case of issues will be limited. The main focus of support given will be and remain on the main release builds (32-bit) of the browser. If you have a breaking issue with it, please feel free to bugreport it (include as much detail as possible about your system and browser setup - in English!) and grab the 32-bit version for the time being.
  4. Performance of the current builds is about on-par with the 32-bit version for most things. They do not yet have the same level of optimization as the 32-bit versions, which balances out with the advantages of running a native 64-bit application. Expect this to be improved in the future.
