Adobe has tested Adobe Acrobat 8.0 (Standard and Professional) on Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating systems running on a 64-bit processor machine. This document describes the known limitations and support options available to users of Adobe Acrobat 8.0 in a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 64-bit environment.

Microsoft publicly released Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 on April 30, 2005. These versions of Windows operating system software are the first designed specifically to work with x64 PCs. Known limitations

The following are known limitations when running Adobe Acrobat 8.0 or in the Windows XP x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64 operating systems running on a 64-bit processor machine.

Error "Document failed to print" when generating a PDF file.

You should not receive the following error message during the installation of the Adobe PDF printer on Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating systems:

"Warning 20225: Adobe Acrobat 8 Setup was unable to create a new item: Adobe PDF Converter. The Adobe PDF Printer may be unavailable. GetLastError: The specified module could not be found."

If you do see this message, please see document 333221, "Error 'Warning 20225...'" or no Adobe PDF printer appears (Acrobat 8.0 on Windows)." Technical Support can't assist with troubleshooting this error message, but the document should resolve the error and allow the printer to be installed. Although the printer does install, the Adobe PDF port will not be installed on the operating system. Changing the Adobe PDF printer to the FILE: port will assist in the conversion process but will not eliminate all issues. Additionally, other PDF creation paths that use the Adobe PDF Printer may fail; this includes the PDFMaker functions in MS Office applications and AutoCAD and the Create PDF From Multiple Files option in the Acrobat file menu.

Use a Postscript file to convert to PDF or print to the Adobe PDF printer when the regular conversion method fails to convert. Can't open PDF within Internet Explorer 64-bit version.

Internet Explorer 64-bit and 32-bit versions are both bundled with Windows XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 x64 systems.? Adobe Acrobat 8.0 and Acrobat 3D can open PDF files inside the browser?window only if you use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer. Acrobat installs a 32-bit ActiveX control (pdf.ocx) that enables Acrobat to open PDF files within Internet Explorer; the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6 does not support 32-bit ActiveX controls.

If the browser is Internet Explorer 64-bit, then PDF files open in the stand-alone Acrobat application, and not inside the browser window.

To open PDF files in the browser window use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 6.

To use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer from the Start menu, choose Start > Programs > Internet Explorer (32-Bit).

To use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer from the Run window:

1. Choose Start > Run.

2. In the Open text box, type the following line, where C is the drive letter on which Internet Explorer is installed: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe

3. Click OK.

Outlook Express error if you attempt to send comments from Acrobat while Outlook Express mail application is running.

Outlook Express displays the error message: "A program is attempting to start Outlook Express, but cannot do so while the current version of the program is running. Close Outlook Express and try again."

When you click OK, Acrobat displays another error message: "An error occurred while sending mail."

If you see these error messages, then close Outlook Express and send comments again. Outlook Express creates a new message and attaches the proper PDF file; when you restart Outlook Express, this new message is sent.

Support policy for Adobe Acrobat in Windows XP x64 and Windows Server 2003 x64

Adobe Acrobat 8.0 were not developed for the Windows XP x64 or Windows 2003 Server x64 operating systems running on a 64-bit processor machine. Adobe Acrobat 8.0 was developed for Windows 2000 SP4, XP Professional, Home Edition, or Tablet PC Edition.

If you use Adobe Acrobat 8.0 in Windows XP x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64, Adobe Technical Support can assist you with Adobe Acrobat 8.0 features and with issues that also occur in supported operating systems. Any unique issues found to occur when you run Adobe Acrobat 8.0 on a 64-bit environment will be reported to Adobe development teams for consideration in a future release.

Technical Support cannot assist you with issues that occur only in Windows XP x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64. Instead, you can use the following support options on the Adobe website:
